The University of Arizona has become the first academic institution in the United States to adopt ‘Open Repository’ – the service from open access publisher BioMed Central, which builds, hosts and maintains uniquely customized DSpace repositories on behalf of organizations.

Through the implementation of the Open Repository service, University of Arizona now has a uniquely customized, reliable and cost-effective repository solution.

Speaking of the announcement, Kimberly Chapman, Campus Repository Service Manager at the University of Arizona Libraries said:” We chose Open Repository because we were looking for a hosted service to help us get started. Open Repository allowed us to get started and focus on working with our customer base immediately. We also benefitted from the experience and expertise the Open Repository staff had with DSpace technology.”

An increasing number of funding bodies are mandating open and unrestricted access to published research. This has necessitated institutions like the University of Arizona to look for innovative ways to store and publicize their research output. BioMed Central's Open Repository service provides an extremely cost effective solution for institutions looking to showcase their intellectual output . Not only does the system help institutions comply with open access mandates, but it can also be fully customized to help organizations raise their profile and showcase their intellectual output.

Speaking of the implementation of Open Repository, Kimberly went on to say: The University of Arizona Campus Repository supports the dissemination of University of Arizona scholarship. Our repository service was developed with input from the campus faculty and departments. Open Repository helps us collect, archive, and preserve scholarly materials produced by campus researchers. It ties into the Libraries’ overall strategy for promoting scholarly communication and open access to campus research.”

Open Repository is built upon the latest version of DSpace, an open-source solution for accessing, managing and preserving scholarly works. Customers of Open Repository benefit from updated system features not only from DSpace themselves, but also from BioMed Central's team who are continually working to enhance their repository service. Demonstrations of the service are available by contacting the Open Repository team.
