Health Service Executive repository launchHealth Services Executive (HSE), Ireland, has decided to implement Open Repository, following a successful pilot project this year. The repository will be officially launched in 2009.HSE is responsible for providing Health and Personal Social Services for everyone living in the Republic of Ireland. It is the largest organization in the country, employing over 130,000 people and also produces a wide range of reports and publications on health issues and developments. The objective of the HSE is to provide services that improve, promote and protect the health and welfare of the public. Free Pilot repository available: We are delighted to confirm the following institutions have chosen to pilot Open Repository: BioMed Central acquired by Springer Science+Business MediaSpringer Science+Business Media, the world's second largest publisher of Scientific, Technical and Medical journals has recently acquired BioMed Central Group which includes Open Repository. Springer is absolutely committed to maintaining BioMed Central's policy of full open access to all research, and this acquisition is great news for open access, demonstrating that it is both a financially viable publishing model and an increasingly important part of mainstream scholarly publishing. In the official announcement, Springer's CEO Derk Haank noted that Springer's Open Choice program, launched in 2004, had been a "positive experience" for the company, and that BioMed Central would strengthen Springer's portfolio of biomedical journals and would allow Springer to offer societies a greater range of publishing options. BioMed Central remains 100% committed to the open access publishing model for peer-reviewed research, and this commitment is guaranteed by BioMed Central's Board of Trustees, which approved the acquisition by Springer. Open Repository's technical architect and DSpace committer, Graham Triggs has just returned from Boston where he attended the DSpace 2.0 development meeting. Held at the Massachusetts institute of technology (MIT), the main objective of this three-day brainstorm was how to plan the next generation of DSpace and how to make it easy for implementers wishing to customize their local installations, and the availability of REST interfaces for integration with other systems. Developers from Fedora also joined the DSpace team for two days as part of a joint venture by the two foundations to co-operate, share ideas and create solutions to benefit both communities. DSpace 2.0 is on schedule for release in early 2009 - we will keep you updated on all the latest developments!Additions to the teamOpen Repository is delighted to welcome Joanna Drakes and Michaela Krog to the team.
