Enhanced Repository Statistics

In 2009, a survey was conducted in the repository community to find the most important feature requests for the next major revision of DSpace. The results from this clearly showed the need for an enhanced statistics package to be included.

Open Repository was quick to react to this and developed a statistics package based on Google Analytics, that could be used by repository managers as

part of the Open Repository service. This service provided data on the overall usage of the repository but also provided a record of file downloads that would otherwise be missed using a standard analytics packages.

Open Repository have now developed this analytics package a step further so that repository managers can see how this relates to an individual item or file, or its relevance in the context of a collection or community. With this functionality we can show how content within the repository is being used, the items and files that are attracting attention, and the reach the repository is having.

SWORD Protocol Service

As more institutions are implementing their own repositories, many are faced with the challenge of how to populate them. To make this process easier, BioMed Central has developed the SWORD protocol. This service, which is available as standard to all Enhanced Open Repository customers, allows any article published in a BioMed Central journal to automatically populate the author’s repository with the published article; regardless of the which repository platform being used by the institution.

This development is part of BioMed Central’s continued commitment to providing immediate and barrier free access to all research published in BioMed Central journals. Using this SWORD protocol service, the official version of an open access article will be automatically deposited in the repository with no need for manual involvement.

Open Repository partner - COAR

Open Repository is pleased to announce its newest partner – the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR). COAR is a not-for profit association of repository initiatives that aims to enhance greater visibility and application of research outputs through global networks of open access digital repositories.

Open Repository will work with COAR to advocate open access digital repository strategies at both a national and international level. These activities will include advocating for consistent policy formulations on institutional repository development and developing strategic partnerships for research infrastructure related initiatives worldwide.

In addition to this the key objectives of this partnership are as follows:

  • To co-ordinate a global collaborative effort towards high-quality open access content and interoperable systems.
  • To act as a reference point for repository standardization efforts and a forum for information exchange.
  • To develop and support interoperable standards for national aggregation of research content in open access repositories.
  • To support the implementation of open access mandates by research funders and institutions
