3 New Customers: Arizona, VHL and Derby

The University of Arizona, Virginia Henderson Library and University of Derby all launched their repositories in the last 3 months, adopting our uniquely customized, reliable and cost-effective repository solution.

The University of Arizona Libraries sought a hosted solution for the University of Arizona Campus Repository because they wanted to get started working with their customer base immediately. Open Repository migrated their School of Information Resources & Library Science’s DLIST collection from E-Prints into the hosted DSpace UA Campus Repository with minimal inconvenience, allowing the library to focus on working with faculty and students to maintain and improve the content of the repository. VHL launched their repository at the Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Biennial Convention in Texas last October. Advances in internet technologies and wider policies requiring mandatory open access articles influenced STTI’s decision to create a repository. It will provide online access to the latest information and conference proceedings affecting nursing professionals worldwide. Find out more here.

University of Derby

An increase in the growth and range of research at the University of Derby and appreciation of the benefits of an open access repository supported their decision to implement a repository. Open Repository’s flexible hosted DSpace solution was chosen because they lacked the technical staff capacity to implement and maintain the repository in-house. New Feature: OpenAthens SP
eduserv

The Open Repository service now includes the OpenAthens SP platform, which enables users to securely manage access to all the solutions held within their organization via a Single Sign-On. Open Access Week 2011
Open Access Africa

BioMed Central successfully held the second annual Open Access Africa conference in October, at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana, during Open Access Week 2011. The conference brought together representatives from Google, British Medical Journal (BMJ), Department for International Development (DFID), Pan African Medical Journal and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) to discuss open access publishing in an African context.

To learn more about our initiative for the developing world, all conference presentations and images are now available to view on our website.

Open Access Week

Open Access Week 2011 also saw Sales Executive Simon Neilson and Regional Development Manager Natalia Timiraos visit Stockholm University. They gave a well-received presentation which looked into the growth of open access, and how institutions can tangibly support authors and mandates. The presentation focused on how, by increasing open access output, an institution can raise the visibility and impact of research, ultimately increasing both the visibility and prestige of an institution. The slides are available to view here.

BioMed Central’s North America Sales Manager Bob Schatz visited Winnipeg, Manitoba, Fairfax, Virginia and New York City during Open Access Week. Bob gave presentations about the state of open access publishing to audiences at the University of Manitoba, George Mason University and Hunter College. His presentation reviewed the broad history of elements that primed initial interest in open access publishing, using that as a context for looking at where commercial open access publishing stands in the present day. With audiences as large as fifty people, Bob’s presentations generated active dialogue amongst audience members.
