Customer Feature – Open Access Datafeeds

Helmholtz Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (Helmholtz Centre of Infection Research) launched their repository in December 2006 and have become the first of Open Repository customer to use the open access datafeeds feature that is available to Silver customers.

This feature enables a datafeed of metadata to be fed from PubMed Central to a repository for all open access articles that have been published by an institution and therefore helping to populate the repository.

The Helmholtz Centre of Infection Research, which is a member of the HelmHoltz Association, Germany’s largest scientific organization fed articles into its repository using Open Repository’s datafeeds feature.  To date approximately 100 items, from 2 years worth of PubMed Central data, have been uploaded into their repository and the harvesting is ongoing.

Populating your repository

Populating your repository can be one of the major challenges facing institutions and as such Open Repository has developed its features and services with this in mind.

Open Repository offers a range of promotional materials to all its customers to assist with the promotion of the repository around the institutions but it also has number of additional tools above the regular submission form that are specifically aimed to making populating the repository as easy as possible for both administrators and users.

PubMed ID / DOI pre-fill
On the submission form there is the option to enter either a PubMed Identifier or a publisher's DOI (Direct Object Identifier) of the item being submitted.  Using this information the repository will auto-populate the submission form's metadata fields, making the process much quicker for the user.

Batch Item Imports (Silver customers only)
Open Repository is able to batch upload complete items (metadata and files) on a collection by collection basis.  To do this we will create a repository specific ftp site for you to upload your items to.  Items need to be placed into a simple import directory with a small contents text file, the qualified Dublin Core metadata in an XML file and the files themselves.  We will assist you with further instructions as to how to create the batch imports on request.

Open Access Datafeeds (Silver customers only)
We are also able to create a datafeed of open access articles from PubMed Central that feeds the metadata from items that have been published by an institution into their repository.  The items then enter a slightly modified workflow that allows the administrator to edit the metadata, upload files and choose which collection to add the item to.  Only administrators specifically added to the datafeed workflow group will be able to see and process the items from the open access datafeeds.  The feeds are run on a daily basis and back data can be uploaded in yearly or monthly batches.
